Writing HTML

HTML is the code for a website. It can also be called the language. In programs like notebook the writer has to know exactly what each code does. But new WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) programs have made it easier to write the HTML for a website by making it possible to see the visual only of the webpage, or the visual split screen with the real code.

Web 2.0 / Ubidesk.com

Web 2.0 websites are sites that are interactive. There are many different ways this is possible whether it is chatting, making websites, making music or editing photographs. Ubidesk is another that is great for collaborative work. It is a website that holds documents that can be accessed through any computer with an Internet. As long as the administrator gives permission any given document can have many authors and editors. the changes can be seen instantly by other users and can be tracked. This tracking feature shows who edited what and when, as well as the overall revisions over time. Although it seems as if everyone involved has free "reign" over the document, the administrator can set limits to how many people can access it and who. If a user wants to edit the piece they must already have been approved by the original author. But if someone not authorized to edit has an idea, they can comment on the piece.

This website is very easy to use and is a great website for students because in school there are quite a few collaborative project. But with busy schedules it is hard to get together to work. That is why this website is the best choice for students to use while cooperating on the project. No matter what time or where any of the students in the group can work on it, and work together.

Although this site ran smoothly I did experience some trouble using it. One of the problems that I encountered was with the layout. Once inside the page editor it was fine but navigating to that site was a little confusing. I had trouble figuring out the difference between what led to my site, my documents, and making a new document. In the end though I was able to find everything okay it just took a little extra time to figure out the layout.

This is a screen capture of Ubisdesk showing one of the features of showing who has edited what part of the document. The text in blue was what I originally typed. And the text in green is what a classmate of mine edited.

Software

Software is exactly what it sounds, "soft" this means that it is all of the programs on the computer, or the CDs or online installations installed on the computer. One example is Twitter. Twitter is used simply as a way to stay in touch with those people that you would not normally specifically call to checkup on. It can be used by students but not necessarily for schoolwork., Most students use it because it is quick and easy. This is better for students because most students unfortunately don't have the time to call each other. Google Docs however is much more useful for students. For group projects it is really easy to collaborate together and quickly get the changes the other person has made on the project.

Hardware

A PC has four main components, the mouse, keyboard, monitor and CPU. The CPU of a PC is the "brain". The mouse, monitor, and keyboard would not do anything without the tower (CPU) running it. Inside the tower is where the motherboard containing computer chips. The tower also contains a converter to transfer energy to the rest of the computer. The energy however creates a lot of heat that could potentially overheat the CPU. To avoid this a CPU needs a fan to blow out all of the hot air from the case (or CPU).

Peripherals are the added extras to a computer. Examples of peripherals are printers, scanners, fax machines, and tablets. These things do not NEED to be connected but they do make using the computer easier or more fun to use.

A LAN is a local area network which means that an office building or school has all of their computers connected to switches, that connect to servers that connect to the Internet. The servers then "deliver" the Internet to the computers on the network. A LAN can be useful because it connects all of the computers in one or more buildings. So if one person is on a computer in their library they can access their files, and they can also access their files on the computer in the lab as well. Although all of this only works correctly if a person saves to the correct location. There are 3 different drives that documents can be saved to, the local, removable, and network drives.

Advanced Search

Advanced Search is a way to refine a search further within Google. It asks specific questions about the search that help narrow down the sometimes millions of searches. To access Advanced Search is quite easy, there is simply a button that one can click just to the right of Google Search. Once inside Advanced Search there is a series of questions to get more information about what the searcher wants to learn. Some of the questions gain information about file type, date of publication, and some just involve adding more to the search.

Copyright

The author has the right to make copies of, distribute, perform, display, and modify their work. The author and/or owner is the only person allowed to do anything with their work .If a student needs to use a source for research at school they are allowed to use the information in their work as long as they reword it to make it their own .This is only allowed however, if they cite the source at the end of their project to give credit to the original author. This credit is given simply through a bibliography. However a bibliography is useful to show the reader that the information was not made up or copied from another author.

Searching the Internet

There are many different types of search engines. They are alike in many simple ways. They all have a simple search bar to type in the initial search. They search a complete database with tons of information that is somewhat the same for each engine but varies a little. One engine is Bing, it is the newest program from Microsoft (formerly Windows Live Search) and is designed to help with a more defined search and more decisions to make the search more precise. Another engine is One more search engine is Altavista. This was one of the first search engines, it is not as popular anymore but it does have great multilingual search options. One last search engine is Lycos, this was also one of the first main search engines. Dogpile is one more search engine, except this engine actually combines the searches of Google, Yahoo!, Bing and Ask.com. Advanced Search is a way to refine a search further within Google. It asks specific questions about the search that help narrow down the sometimes millions of searches. Another Google branch is Google Scholar, this is a search that finds mostly educational literature written by those involved in education, including PhDs, graduates students, and professors.
